DESCRIPTION

Sonic the Hedgehog Classic is an accurate mobile port of one of the most beloved platform games of all time. Experience all of the magic of the original Sonic game from your phone, either totally free with ads or for an incredibly low price to turn off ads forever.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the most influential video games of its time. In the modern era, we're familiar with fast, twitchy platformers with collectibles, bosses, and memorable music. In 1991, these things were not the norm. Sonic's incredibly engaging gameplay allowed it to start a beloved gaming franchise, complete with countless sequels, spinoffs, and even a recent movie with Jim Carrey.

Sonic the Hedgehog Classic is a mobile release of the classic game that started it all. It's an amazing way to get something close to the classic Sonic experience in your pocket. The port is very faithful, allowing you to play through the full Sega Genesis version of the game, complete with secret levels and more. While there's plenty of great content in this game, skilled players can beat the game in an hour or two.

In Sonic the Hedgehog Classic, you control Sonic on his adventure to defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik. Sonic runs very, very quickly through each level. Your goal is to control him so he jumps over obstacles, jumps on springs, rolls down slopes, and even goes through loops in order to reach his goals. Sonic can attack enemies by spinning his body around rapidly, and he can collect a number of golden rings strewn across each level. Collecting 50 rings in any level in Act 1 or 2 will unlock a special stage, where Sonic gets to power up into a spinning state and explore a maze filled with coins to find an emerald.

Sonic's gameplay holds up incredibly well. It's not a modern game in terms of accessibility or difficulty, sure, but that's part of the charm. There are sections that are wildly difficult compared to the rest of the game with no real warning, the death mechanic is genuinely punishing if you're not careful, and the extra fun special stages can be a pain to access (or even learn about) if you're new to the game.

Again, though, that's part of what makes Sonic the Hedgehog Classic fun. This isn't a game like Temple Run where you grind on an endless activity. Instead, Sonic features discrete levels that you can master and bounded challenges that you can finish. In other words, while the game is hard, you'll feel great when you overcome its challenges. Conquering them all will allow you to celebrate ultimate victory, rather than trapping you in an endless cycle of comparing your score on a global leaderboard.

The touchscreen controls for Sonic the Hedgehog Classic are okay, but not great. There's definitely a little bit lacking in terms of precise control. Given how fast the game is, this will inevitably lead to a few moments of frustration while you play through the game. It's still super fun, but this is probably not the right platform to play the game if you're an expert trying to speedrun your favorite levels.

Sonic the Hedgehog is free with in-game ads. You can pay $2 to turn off ads forever, which is a very reasonable price for a game that's this enjoyable.

How to play

Your ability to precisely maneuver with Sonic is the key to your success in Sonic the Hedgehog Classic. While the mobile controls aren't perfect, they are customizable. Try adjusting the size of your on-screen d-pad in order to get more accurate inputs. Generally speaking, bigger is better, but try to make sure that you keep the controls small enough that your fingers can easily reach all of the key areas.

Sonic moves pretty fast. At first, it'll be tempting to try to take advantage of all of that speed. Until you've mastered the game, however, you'll want to back off of the accelerator a little bit and make sure you leave enough time for you to react to obstacles. As you learn levels, you'll be able to blow through them with more and more speed. For your first couple of playthroughs, however, relax a bit and hit the brakes while you're getting the lay of the land.

One of the common themes in Sonic is the idea that the top path is easy, but the bottom path is hard. If you can, try to avoid falling off of the upper route through each level. Sticking up high will let you zoom over enemies and difficult sections of the level while giving you more coins. As if that wasn't enough, you'll usually just fall down to the more difficult bottom section of the level if you screw up. If you're on the bottom already when you fall, you tend to wind up in a bottomless pit or a deadly spike trap.

Sonic controls very differently from Mario or other platform heroes. One of the key concepts in every Sonic game is that Sonic has a lot of momentum. He's slow to accelerate, he turns slowly, and he doesn't have a lot of ability to control himself in the air. On the flip side, once you get going, he can zoom through levels faster than pretty much any other game hero out there. This means that you'll have to plan ahead in Sonic more than in other games. Try to conserve momentum as much as you can so you can go fast, jump high, and make the level a breeze.

Finally, don't worry too much about coins, especially if you're new. Coins are great for avoiding death from enemies, spikes, and other hazards, but they don't need to be your main goal. Many coins are deliberately placed in out-of-the-way areas to encourage you to take alternate routes or explore levels in new ways. It's usually a bad idea to backtrack for these collectibles. Instead, make a mental note of their location and pick them up on your next playthrough of the level without losing all of your momentum.
