DESCRIPTION

Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty is a teaching tool for helping young children learn about the bathroom. Daniel Tiger and his friends play a series of engaging puzzle minigames until one of them needs to use the restroom. Once they need to go, you get to immediately send them to the bathroom and help them through the steps of going potty.

Daniel Tiger is an animated PBS Kids show loosely based on characters and ideas from Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Daniel Tiger, the show's main character, is a rough allegory for Mr. Rogers. Throughout the show, he discusses topics related to childhood, life, and growing up, providing both useful advice and a helpful mirror through which children can learn and grow.

Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty is a potty training app developed using characters and voices from the show. It's designed to help reinforce several important ideas: first, that it's important to go potty when you feel like you need to go, and second, that it's important to stick to a routine when you use the bathroom.

The app features a number of engaging, well-built minigames that Daniel Tiger and his friends can engage in. After a few seconds or minutes of play, Daniel or one of his friends will begin doing the "potty dance" and a popup will appear to let you know that they need to use the restroom. They'll sing a catchy song ("When you have to go potty, stop and go right away") and stop playing their games until you press a button to bring them to the restroom.

Once in the restroom, the character will ask for assistance in their bathroom routine. You'll help them get on the toilet, wipe, flush, wash their hands, and dry their hands before they go back to the minigame. The characters will politely ask for assistance with whatever the next step in their routine is, ensuring that it's easy to figure out what you need to do next.

The puzzles and games in Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty aren't revolutionary or complex, but they are surprisingly high quality for a game that's ostensibly about potty training. Even if this wasn't a toilet training app, it's easy to justify the purchase of this game to have a fun, colorful, and age-appropriate set of puzzles that you can work on with your kids. The games, characters, and backgrounds are all very well animated, and the sound design is superb. Catchy songs from the show pervade the app, too, making it an exceedingly high-quality experience for a very low price.

Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty is probably not the sort of thing you want to buy if you don't have kids that are nearing potty training age. If you do, however, it makes a great additional tool that you can add to your arsenal. It won't do the whole job for you, but it will help reinforce key ideas like going to the bathroom when you need to go, establishing a good bathroom routine, and will help normalize the concept of going to the bathroom. It's a great app to explore together with your young kids that's totally safe for them to play on their own.

How to play

Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty is designed to be played with and by young children. The app has large, colorful icons and a cast of characters that tells you exactly what you need to do next.

There are four modes in Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty. Three of these modes are unique games that Daniel and his friends play. The fourth is a series of music videos about using the restroom, exploring themes like the ready availability of bathrooms in public spaces and what to do in the bathroom. These music videos can be found on the internet, but it's helpful to have them all in one place in the game.

In the first game, Daniel Tiger and his friend Katerina Kittycat ask you to help them build block towers using virtual blocks. The blocks are different shapes and colors and can be stacked in a variety of configurations. Every once in a while, Daniel begins doing the potty dance and lets you know that he needs to go potty. A bathroom icon pops up that can be used to take Daniel to the toilet.

Once at the toilet, Daniel asks for your help getting on the toilet. He uses the restroom, then asks for you to hand him some toilet paper. Next, he asks you to help him to the sink, pump soap on his paws, rub his paws together under the running water, turn off the water, and then help him dry his hands with the towel. All of these tasks are accomplished by selecting the corresponding objects on the screen. Daniel will helpfully remind you of what to do next at every step of the way.

In the second game, Katerina Kittycat and Daniel Tiger are playing with a wall of water. You can redirect the flow of water down the wall by rearranging various toys and parts along the wall. In this game, it's Katerina Kittycat who has to go potty, and she'll direct you through the same series of steps as Daniel. Just like with Daniel, she'll tell you exactly what to do next.

The third and final game involves stacking rings with Daniel's sister Margaret, a young baby. You get to help Margaret stack rings until she scrunched up her face, fills up her diaper, and starts to cry. Once this happens, you can tap the diaper icon to help Mom Tiger change her diaper. Just like in the previous two scenarios, the characters on the screen will tell you what to do in order to proceed in the scenario.

The minigames in Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty are designed to be an engaging activity that's more than just background noise. They're not perfect, but they're quite engaging in their own right. When combined with the animated characters, it's easy for you and your kid to lose track of time in between Daniel TIger and his friends' bathroom adventures.

Have you tried Daniel Tiger's Stop & Go Potty? What questions did your kids have about the app? Was it a helpful tool? Let us know in the comments below! We'd love to hear about your experiences using the app and whether or not you'd recommend it to other parents.
